Correlations between growth factors and other variables were estimated by using Spearman’s rho correlation coefficient. Fisher’s Exact test was used to compare proportions. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to develop a prognostic model of the influence of confounding factors (HIV status, age, sex, diagnosis, and previous antibiotics) on the primary outcome measure, inpatient mortality. CSF and plasma growth factors in children with bacterial meningitis were analyzed by using Wilcoxon’s Signed Ranks test. Adjusted odds ratios (ORs) were obtained by using logistic regression. All tests were two-tailed, and a P value of < 0.05 was considered significant.ResultsPatient characteristicsWe studied 293 children (57% boys), of whom 64 (22%) died.
