Through our research, we hypothesize that multisensory integration, particularly the combination of visual and somatosensory information (VSI), could be employed as a novel marker for preclinical Alzheimer's Disease, given its previously observed association with significant motor outcomes (balance, gait, and falls) and cognitive performance (attention) in the aging population. While the negative consequences of dementia and cognitive decline on the connection between multifaceted sensory input and motor proficiency are evident, the underlying functional and neuroanatomical networks that mediate this connection remain unexplained. The following outlines the protocol for 'The VSI Study', intended to reveal if preclinical Alzheimer's disease is related to neural dysfunctions in subcortical and cortical areas impacting multisensory processes, cognitive abilities, and motor skills, and eventually causing a decrease in mobility. Our longitudinal, observational study will include 208 community-dwelling elderly participants, both with and without preclinical Alzheimer's Disease, and will conduct annual monitoring. The design of our experiment enables the assessment of multisensory integration as a fresh behavioral metric for preclinical Alzheimer's disease; the identification of functional neural networks at the nexus of sensory, motor, and cognitive function; and the determination of early Alzheimer's Disease's influence on future mobility declines, including instances of falls.
